Fabula palliata

Palliata or fabula palliata is a genus of Roman comedy.

The name provides a contrast to generic Fabula togata and is of the pallium, the mantle or union of the Greek actor, is derived. Besides the pallium wore the actors in the palliata still wigs, but not the usual Greek theater masks.

The materials of the palliata are taken from the Greek New Comedy and provide information on the Hellenistic ideas.

Known representatives of the palliata are Plautus and Terence, of which a total of 26 pieces have been preserved.
