Fachinformationszentrum Karlsruhe

FIZ Karlsruhe - Leibniz Institute for Information Infrastructure (until 2009 Technical Information Centre (FIZ ) Karlsruhe Society for Scientific and Technical Information mbH ) is a non-profit organization of the Leibniz Association for Scientific Information and services with a focus on energy, physics and mathematics.

History

The resolved by the Federal Government " program to promote Information and Documentation ( I & D ) program from 1974 to 1977 " was aimed to summarize the hitherto largely uncoordinated activities in information science in 16 central specialized information systems in order to ensure an efficient supply of information.

In 1977, the technical information center Karlsruhe was founded as a limited company of the Federation and the countries with the scientific focus on energy, physics and mathematics. On June 6, 1977, the partnership agreement was signed by the federal and Länder, on 22 August 1977, the entry in the commercial register and thus the foundation of the technical information center Energie, Physik, Mathematik GmbH in the legal sense.

At the foundation of five scientific institutions were merged:

  • Central Office for Nuclear Energy documentation Karlsruhe ( Zaed ), founded in 1957
  • Central Office of Aeronautics and Space Documentation and Information in Munich ( ZLDI ), founded in 1954
  • Physical editorial reports Braunschweig ( PB), founded in 1845
  • Editorial Zentralblatt für Mathematik Berlin ( ZfM ), founded in 1931
  • Editorial Zentralblatt of Mathematics Education Karlsruhe ( ZDM ), founded in 1969.

In 1987 the name was changed to Fachinformationszentrum Karlsruhe GmbH. Since 2009, it bears the name of FIZ Karlsruhe - Leibniz Institute for Information Infrastructure.

Facts and Figures

FIZ Karlsruhe has approximately 340 employees, a third of scientists.

The partners are:

  • Federal Republic of Germany
  • State of Baden- Württemberg
  • Scientific organizations Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science ( MPG)
  • Fraunhofer Society for the Promotion of Applied Research (FhG)
  • German Physical Society (DPG )
  • Association of German Engineers ( VDI)
  • Society for computer science (GI )
  • German Mathematical Society (DMV).

The head office of FIZ Karlsruhe is located on the North Campus of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology - KIT (former Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe) in Eggenstein- Leopoldshafen. There are also offices in Berlin and Bonn and a subsidiary FIZ Karlsruhe Inc. in Princeton, New Jersey, United States. Its activities are financed FIZ Karlsruhe to about 80 % by income from its activities; the grants of federal and state cover the remaining financial needs.

Activities

STN International

The most important service provided by FIZ Karlsruhe is the online service STN International. About him are about 150 databases with scientific- technical and patent information available.

E - Science solutions KnowEsis

For applications in the field of e-Science FIZ Karlsruhe has the e - Science solutions KnowEsis developed. KnowEsis supports universities, research institutes and multidisciplinary scientific organizations in knowledge management and the collaborative scientific work.

As part of its e-Science activities FIZ Karlsruhe implemented together with the Max Planck Society ( MPG ) the joint by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research ( BMBF) project eSciDoc with the aim of an information, communication and publication platform for research institutions to create.

Databases and specialized portals in science, mathematics and computer science

FIZ Karlsruhe produces in national and international collaborations databases and subject gateways in the fields of energy, physics and mathematics.

ENERGY is a bibliographic database covering the worldwide literature of energy research and energy technology. It is created in cooperation with 15 other countries in the framework of international cooperation with the program Energy Technology Data Exchange ( ETDE ) of the International Energy Agency (IEA).

INIS is created as part of an international collaboration coordinated by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA ) and includes a Bibliography from the fields of nuclear research and nuclear technology.

ICSD is a database of inorganic crystal structures. It contains around 100,000 crystal structures that have been published since 1913. In addition, scientists are offered the opportunity to deposit crystal structures in a crystal structure Depot at FIZ Karlsruhe.

In cooperation with the European Mathematical Society and the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences, the " Zentralblatt für Mathematik " is ( ZBMATH ), a searchable database mathematics, created and offered as a web service. The Mathematics Portal ZBMATH is the central access point to all mathematics databases from FIZ Karlsruhe, a web search engine for mathematics, and Topic in applied mathematics, mathematics history and didactics.

In the field of computer science FIZ Karlsruhe in cooperation with three German universities, the computer science portal io -port.net developed that brings together previously only available separately, computer and computer science - specialist databases under a single interface.

Full Text Service FIZ AutoDoc

The web-based Document Delivery Service FIZ AutoDoc delivers affiliated National and international library and publishing articles in journals and patent documents in electronic or printed form.

In connection with the STN Database Research FIZ AutoDoc acts within the STN Full-Text Solution as a document delivery service for European customers. However, it is also offered as a stand-alone web portal full text order, and used in the intranet of several companies as literature supply system.

Research Service

The research service by FIZ Karlsruhe assumes, inter alia, the selection of relevant databases, formulated the search strategy, execute the search - for example, for patents, articles in professional journals or research papers - and sends the client the search result to. An analysis of the retrieved documents may also be added in order.

Infrastructure tasks for the company

FIZ Karlsruhe represents on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research ( BMBF), Germany in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA ) and the International Energy Agency ( IEA) in Paris and participates to the worldwide exchange and collection of information energy technologies.

Research in collaboration with the Youth Foundation created the FIZ Karlsruhe, the full-text database JufoBase with the work of award-winning youth research participants.

BINE

In the course of the two oil crises in 1973 and 1979, the interest of the German population in alternative energy sources and energy efficiency technologies increased considerably. By answering the growing number of citizen requests the then Federal Ministry for Research and Technology was (BMFT ) so busy that the end of 1979, the Bonn office of FIZ Karlsruhe was commissioned. Work began in October 1979. Since the beginning of 1981 this service operates independently under BINE (initially: Citizens Information New energy techniques, short BINE, in the self- description often BINE - Energy Research to Practice ), which BINE became one of the first public provider of qualified research information from the energy sector. Over the years, the scope and issues of energy research and thus the task profile and the target groups of BINE extended. Responsibility for energy research changed later in the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi). Today, the ESD information service reported with six editors on the results and perspectives of approximately 500 ongoing research projects in the areas of efficient technologies and renewable energies. Through public funding should BINE offer vendor-neutral and technology- neutral information.

FIZ Karlsruhe editorially supervised the research portals of the BMWi.

There is free BINE publications include, among others:

  • BINE information, the four-sided series provides information on the latest results from research and demonstration projects. ISSN 0937-8367
  • BINE Themeninfos take on 20 pages together results and document the current state to topics of energy research. ISSN 1610-8302
  • BasisEnergie 20 explains basic topics in the areas of energy conservation and renewable energy. ISSN 1438-3802

Education and training

FIZ Karlsruhe is a training company for the Vocational Training Act in the areas of documentation and information as well as information technologies ( IT). Be trained specialist in media and information services, specialists in the fields of system integration and application development, and computer science merchants. In addition, the FIZ Karlsruhe internships are possible.
