The Faculté Polytechnique de Mons ( FPMs ) was the oldest university in the Belgian city of Mons and the first engineering school in Belgium ( 1836). The faculty formed in a five -year course of Engineers ( Master of Science ( MSc) ), the promotion was possible. On 1 January 2009 she went on to the newly founded University of Mons, together with the larger Université de Mons- Hainaut.

History

1836 saw the governor of the province of Hainaut, Jean -Baptiste Thorn the needs of the former is contained in changing industry engineers. On October 21, 1836 the Provincial Council decided to establish (Eng. Mining School of Hainaut), the Ecole Provinciale des Mines du Hainaut.

Thorn took the École centrale Paris as a model. At the Ecole Provinciale des Mines du Hainaut were then as now formed broadly trained engineers. The Ecole Provinciale des Mines du Hainaut was the first engineering school in Belgium ( 1836). Only in 1837 the Ecole des Mines of the Université de Liège and 1838, the Ecole du Génie Civil Ghent University was founded. Théophile Guibal and Barthélémi -Adolphe Devillez, engineers from the École Centrale Paris, were charged with the creation of the program.

1845 and 1876, the program was herstrukturiert and curricula have been expanded. The school was called from 1845 Ecole de Commerce, d' Industrie et des Mines du Hainaut and from 1876 Faculté Polytechnique du Hainaut. During the First World War of 1914-1918, the school closed its doors. In 1920 the school as Ecole des Mines et de Métallurgie, Faculté Technique de la Province de Hainaut the status of a legal entity by the Belgian Parliament. In 1935, the school to its present name, Faculté Polytechnique de Mons.

The University Today

At the FPMs are currently studying (2004-2005) about 1200 students of which about 170 yearly diplomieren. The FPMs taught and graduated Bachelor of Science ( BSc ) and Master of Science ( M.Sc.) in architecture, chemistry and materials science, electricity, computer science ( economics ), mechanics and mining. Also offers the FPMs to further studies and doctorates.

The FPM has 25 research laboratories and four research centers ( Multitel, Materia Nova, Inisma, CETIC - links to you only in English or French). The FPM is in the ERASMUS program and maintains 25 direct partnerships with foreign universities. She is also a member of the TIME network ( Top Industrial Managers for Europe). On 6 July 2007 the Board of Directors of FPMs and the Université de Mons -Hainaut unanimously decided to merge to form the Université de Mons. This new university is to work from the academic year 2009-2010 ..
