Faeto

Faeto ( Franco-Provençal Faito, [ [ faitə ]]) is a town with 644 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2012) in the province of Foggia in Apulia. Together with Celle di San Vito is a Faeto frankoprovenzalische linguistic island in Puglia.

History

Establishing history of Faeto two versions are called in general. The first is called as founding members Waldensian refugees who have been persecuted and driven end of the 12th century and the beginning of the 13th century from southern France. The second, now generally recognized hypothesis, based on documents from the 13th century, demonstrating that French soldiers who fought for the Anjou against the Saracens, who settled in the region, more precisely in Faeto and Celle di San Vito. On the basis of today spoken language can be demonstrated in each case that the founders have come from the southern French region. The place name Faeto ( frankoprovenz. FAITE, Provencal. Fayéte ) is traced back to the Latin word Fagetum " Buchenwald" (from Latin Fagus = " book ").

Faeto is 820 meters above sea level. inst the highest inhabited place in Puglia.

Demographic Trends

Faeto, like many other small municipalities in Italy to fight with a strong migration. Counted the place in 1911, just under 5,000 inhabitants, there are now just under 700 Young people see no future for themselves and their families and for decades tend to leave the place.
