Fahy

Fahy is a municipality in the district of Porrentruy in the canton of Jura in Switzerland.

Geography

Fahy is on 567 m above sea level. M., 9 km west of the district municipal seat Porrentruy (air line). The farming village on the border with France extends on the plateau of the Jura in the west of Ajoie ( German Elsgau ).

The area of ​​7.8 km ² large municipality area includes the gently rolling, karst plateau Ajoie showing no surface watercourses. The northern section of the area is partly wooded ( Bois and Bois Juré de la Manche ). At the height of Sur l' Epenatte is located 607 m above sea level. M. the highest elevation of the community. From the municipality surface 1997 9 % came from settlements, 26 % of forest and shrubs, 57% to agriculture and about 8 % was unproductive land, which belongs to the place of arms of Bure.

Population

With 370 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Fahy is one of the smaller communities of the Canton of Jura. Of the 95.6 % inhabitants are French-speaking, German-speaking 1.8 % and 1.5 % Italian-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Fahy in 1850 amounted to 549 residents in 1900 to 492 inhabitants. After that there were only minor changes until 1970 (501 inhabitants). Since then a sharp decrease.

Economy

Fahy was until 1950 a predominantly dominantly agricultural village. Since then, several companies have settled, including the Peugeot company, which is responsible for the entire import of Peugeot vehicles in Switzerland. More jobs are available in the manufacture of watches, in the mechanical, textile and food industries as well as in cross-border trade. Thanks to the fertile soil makes agriculture but still a great value.

History

First mention is the place in 1177 as Fahyl 1483 the spelling appears Fahyt. The place name is derived from the Latin word Fagus ( beech). In 1461 Fahy came to the Prince-Bishopric of Basel. During the Burgundian War, the village was in 1474 and 1475 almost completely razed to the ground twice. From the 16th to the 18th century, the village was under the Office Meier Bure. Between 1793 and 1815 Fahy belonged to France and was initially part of the département du Mont- Terrible, associated from 1800 with the Department of Haut -Rhin. By the decision of the Congress of Vienna, the place came in 1815 to the canton of Bern and on 1 January 1979 at the newly founded Canton Jura.

Attractions

Fahy until 1802 belonged to the parish Grand Fontaine, then the built 1787-88 Church of Saint- Pierre was elevated to parish church. In the center some characteristic farmhouses of the Haute- Ajoie from the 19th century are preserved. Until the beginning of the 20th century, the water has been extracted using a well.
