Fairey Hendon

The Fairey Hendon was a twin-engined British heavy bomber night. The aircraft had 1931 as the Fairey Night Bomber ( later Hendon MK I) his first flight and was built for the Royal Air Force after the specification B.19/27, as successors of the Vickers Virginia.

History

With its cantilevered wings and the landing gear faired the Hendon was a milestone in the aircraft design. Although the Hendon won the bid, but the bomber could not in terms of delivered to the Royal Air Force copies prevail against the Handley Page Heyford from. The Royal Air Force ordered 124 copies of the Heyford, but only 14 units of the Fairey Hendon.

The Hendon was built by Fairey in two different versions. MK I still had a two -bladed propeller, an open cockpit and was powered by two Rolls- Royce Kestrel IIIS. In the MK II ( standard version ), the cockpit was glazed and closed. The engines were replaced by stronger Rolls -Royce Kestrel VI.
