History

In the oral history, it is indicated that in 1808 Boaz Fleming annually moved to Clarksburg to pay the tax from his brother's Harrison County and its own control of Monongalia County. When he was in Clarksburg at a social event, he visited his cousin Dolley Madison and complained about this very long annual trip. Dolley Madison proposed to him to make his own county to so that he does not have to make a year as a long journey. After six years of trying to collect (in honor of Dolley Madison and her husband James Madison ) Boaz Fleming signatures for a new County, with the proposed name of Madison County. This petition had no success, to get sufficient support. Then he focused on the formation of a town. 1819 a road from Clarksburg was formed to Morgantown. His farm was in an area between these cities and was a good resting place for travelers. He founded the small town in 1819 on the west side of the Monongahela River. This city was registered on 19 January 1820 as Middletown.

It is not clear whether the city was due to its location between Clarksburg and Morgantown or because of the city the first wife of Boaz Fleming, the Middletown, Delaware, was called by this name. 1842 hit William Haymond before that the town's name is changed to Fairmont ( fair = beautiful mount = mountain ) because the city had a beautiful view of the Monongahela River. This name was registered in 1843 by the Virginia General Assembly.
