Phaistos (Greek Φαιστός ( m. sg. ) ) Is a municipality ( Δήμος, Dimos ) in the southwest of the Regional District of Heraklion on the Greek Mediterranean island of Crete. The island forms one of the 13 regions of Greece.

The community Phaistos was formed by the merger of the municipalities and municipal districts present Tymbaki, Mires and Zaros due to the Kallikratis Act of 2010. Seat of the municipality is the town of Mires. The town was named after the archaeological site of Phaistos.

Structure

Since 1 January 2011 Phaistos is divided into three municipal districts and 26 villages. The villages, which are called depending on the population as Dimotiki kinotita or topiki kinotita to elect local representatives. The population figures are derived from the results of the census of 2011.
