Fajardo (Puerto Rico)

Fajardo is a city in the northeast of the U.S. foreign territory Puerto Rico. It lies north of Ceiba and east of Luquillo. In the 19 districts in 2010 there were about 37,000 people. Fajardo is the center of recreational boating to the island and a major port location for connections to the islands of Culebra and Vieques, and the Virgin Islands.

History

Fajardo was established in 1760-1774 under the name Santiago de Fajardo. The city was one of the places that were used by the Americans to invade Puerto Rico. On August 1, 1898, the sailing ship USS Puritan sailed under the leadership of Captain Frederic W. Rodgers along the coast of Puerto Rico, as this perceived a lighthouse off the coast of Fajardo, who was assigned as the landing place of the United States Army. Rodgers ordered some of his troops to go ashore to hoist the American flag on the lighthouse.

Policy

The Mayor Aníbal Meléndez Rivera Fajardo is with the Partido Nuevo Progresista. He has been in office since 1988. The city belongs to the Senate District VIII, which is represented in national affairs by two senators.

Flag

The flag of the city consists of three equally wide horizontal stripes in the colors red, white and blue. The red stripe symbolizes the color of the border of a shield, the white stripe is the middle part of the protection shield. The lower blue stripe symbolizes the sky and the sea coast of Fajardo. Centrally placed on the flag is the coat of arms. This has the shape of a square with rounded lower side, and a panel of three golden castle towers crown on the upper side. In the middle of the emblem is on a blue background with a silver sailing ship that rides on three silver waves and is surrounded by two silver birds. On both sides of the coat of arms of two golden dolphins is held. Below the coat of arms is a curved silver band with the inscription " SANTIAGO DE FAJARDO ."

Tourism

Both international and local tourists in Fajardo is very popular for its seafood, its proximity to the surrounding islands as well as the many offerings for day trips. The local airport is served by three small airlines that fly to Culebra and Vieques, among other things. The beaches are very rich palm, the sea is very well suited for its clear water for snorkeling. At seven beaches water sports activities are available. A special Fajardo represent the bioluminescent lagoons that attract many tourists and locals at night especially.
