The city was founded in the summer of 1857 by James Lane, John Burbank, Burbank and JE Issac L. Hamby in the north of the Big Nemaha River. As the river had previously formed in the vicinity of the city a waterfall, they called the city of Falls City. The waterfall is no longer seen today.
