False Dmitriy I
The False Dimitri (also "(1 ) false Demetrius" or "( 1 ) Pseudo - Dimitri ", Russian Лжедмитрий I., .. † 17 Maijul / May 27 1606greg ) was 1605/ 06 as Dimitri II for short period of Russian Tsar. His reign falls into the " Time of Troubles ".
Life
Dimitri claimed to be the youngest son of Ivan the Terrible, Dmitri Ivanovich. He drew support from the Polish-Lithuanian troops and secret agreement with the Polish king Sigismund III. in Moscow and was crowned on July 21, 1605 to the tsar. His opponents claimed that his name was in fact Grigori Otrepyev and is a monk from the monastery Chudov. As a fugitive monk he had appeared in 1601 in Poland, where I found support in Catholic magnates and prelates. After he had converted to Catholicism, he became engaged to Marina (1580-1613), daughter of Jerzy Mniszech, voivode of Sandomierz.
As a ruler he endeavored to lead an independent internal and external policies. His government made himself popular with the gentry by confiscated monastic property was ceded to the families. Dimitri assured the farmers to ten year tax freedom and lower Fronbelastung.
His attempt only based on the common people to govern, failed because he thus any support of the Russian nobility was deprived. In one, by Vasily Schuiski its direct successor as Russian Czar, instigated revolt he was assassinated on 17 May 1606.
He was commonly known as wise and far-sighted Czar, some of the reforms of Peter the Great anticipated.
