Falsterbo

The Falsterbo peninsula is located at the southwestern tip of the Scandinavian peninsula. It forms the border between the Baltic and the Sound. It lies about 25 kilometers south of Malmö.

The peninsula is separated by the Falsterbo Channel from the mainland, which shortens the distance between the Sound and the Baltic Sea.

Geography

Geographically, the peninsula is divided into two areas:

In the western part of the peninsula, the historically significant city Skanör med Falsterbo lies with the districts of Falsterbo in the south and to the north Skanör. At the base of the peninsula lying west and east of Falsterbo Canal and the places Ljunghusen Höllviken.

Importance of the peninsula for bird migration

Because of the special situation ( most southwest tip of Sweden country ) the Falsterbo is very important for bird migration in Scandinavia. Most birds migrate in a southwesterly direction, and since almost all types are afraid of the sea crossing, they can be along the coastline lastly by Falsterbo direct it, until it will go no further. This effect is reinforced, also called the " flyway " effect, by the predominantly southwesterly winds ( Gegenwind! ), which forces the birds to fly close to the ground at the prevailing lower wind speed. By the associated proximity to the water they are based more likely on the coastal course. This reach most songbird species on the peninsula and use it as a resting place before Weiterzug. A significant portion of the approximately 500 million birds that draw in the fall of the Scandinavian peninsula to the south, attracts over Falsterbo. The Weiterzug leads, depending on wind direction across the Baltic Sea to Denmark on the central European mainland.

Attractions

Falsterbo is known for the Falsterbo Bird Observatory since most migratory birds leave the Scandinavian Peninsula over the five- kilometer long Falsterbo reef south. The reef and the sandy beaches on the peninsula offer one of the most beautiful beaches in the south of Sweden, surrounded by very long flowering heaths.

Traffic

There are good, operated by the public transport companies Skånetrafiken, bus services to Trelleborg and Malmö. From Skanör to Ystad runs a picturesque coastal road, where there are many well-marked campsites and a youth hostel.
