The moth was originally created out of the movement around the occupation of foreign slaughterhouse St. Marx Vienna in 1976 ( cf. Arena). On 25 May 1977, the first edition of the butterfly appeared. For the core in the first years be understood as collective Butterfly editors were among students at the Institute for Theatre Studies of the University of Vienna, including the founder of the newspaper Armin Thurnher, Christian Martin Fuchs and Walter Martin Kienreich. Concerns of the magazine founder was to report in terms of a counter-public sphere of the everyday, everyday racism and the "golden Viennese heart ", but above all to provide as complete a calendar of events for Vienna. Editor of the the 2 -weekly magazine was the Association of the Friends of the butterfly.

In 1979, the editorial was awarded the junior award of the Dr. -Karl -Renner- Journalism Award. In the following year appeared with the "Instruction booklet Vienna " the first publication of the moth - book publisher. Until 1980, the moth appeared in the pure hand sales system, and only then, with a circulation of approximately 10,000 copies, the distribution was professionally organized. 1981 moved the editors of the rooms in the Esslinggasse in the Zelinkagasse (both in the 1st District, Inner City ) and was henceforth published by Falter Verlag GmbH. The response on the part of so criticized was carried out on the non- journalistic field: 1995 covered the Kronen Zeitung the moth because of a competition with lawsuits in the millions, which would almost certainly means the end of the financial newspaper. More turbulence caused the creation of the news magazine format in 1998. The new magazine, but also to stand in direct competition magazine profile, upgraded personnel to and promoted from almost all known at the time moth - editors, including the deputy editor Doris Knecht, the but still occasionally guest comments for the moth writes.

After Kerbler had withdrawn from the publisher in 1999, took hits and Thurnher together 74.1 percent, 24.9 percent were held by Hans -Michael Piech and Hannes Pflaum. As the parent company of the two publishers, the ST Holding was founded.
