Family History Center (LDS Church)

The Genealogical Society of Utah was founded in 1894 with the aim to help members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter -day Saints ( " Mormons " ) in collecting family history information to this the usual in their faith vicarious baptism and other ceremonies for deceased mainly to allow non-Mormon ancestors. History

The films are stored in a document vault in Salt Lake City in six air-conditioned tunnels under 200 meters of solid granite.

Facts and Figures

The number of countries, in which was filmed so far, is about 160, the annual growth is approximately 60,000 microfilm rolls ( worldwide). The total number of microfilms is currently specified by 2300000 rollers. Currently, more than 250 Verfilmungs projects run in more than 45 countries.

The library of the Genealogical Society

The main point of the library is the " Family History Library " in Salt Lake City. There, almost all movies are permanently available. In addition, numerous encyclopedias, books, and genealogical periodicals are ready to use.

Family History Centers

Copies of the microfilm can be ordered in any of the world's approximately 3,800 Family History Centers of the LDS Church.

The first branch of the Main Library was established in 1964. In 1976 there were about 200 jobs worldwide, in 1982 there were 400, after another six years (1988 ) already 1200, another six years later (1994 ) were about 2,250 there.

The evaluation of the resources is carried out only locally at particular microfilm readers. The movies can not be taken home. Per month are total ordered around 100,000 roles worldwide.
