Fan Chuo (Tang dynasty)

Fan Chuo (Chinese樊 绰/樊 绰, Pinyin Fan Chuo; late 9th century ) was a secretary in Jiedu (Chinese节度/节度, Pinyin Jie Du, a kind of province, similar to the Byzantine theme) in Hanoi.

This province of the Chinese Tang Dynasty was on the border of Nanzhao. Fan Chuo therefore had access to the documents of both countries firsthand. Later, after Hanoi had been conquered, he moved to Guangzhou. There he wrote a book entitled Manshu, which he completed 862 (Chinese蛮 书/蛮 书, pinyin Manshu ). The book contains valuable information about the Nanzhao and other peoples of southwest China.
