Fan Ye (historian)

Fan Ye (Chinese范 晔, W.-G. Fan Yeh, * 398, † 445 ) was a Chinese historian who compiled the Book of the Later Han.

Fan Ye belonged to the middle- level officials of the Liu Song Dynasty. His grandfather had been head of an administrative district, his father, an official at the imperial court. Fan Ye even brought it up to the manager and general of the Guard. His own political ambitions finally were his undoing: he was executed in 445 by Emperor Wen.

By his death was his history, he had about 20 years earlier, unfinished, from the planned 100 chapters were written only 90. His work was originally intended to include 10 chapters annals of the emperors and empresses, 10 chapters and 80 monographs biographical chapter. For the compilation of monographs he came no more.

Later, the commentator Liu Zhao attempted ( 550 ) to close the gaps in Fan Yes Factory, where he moved among others, the history of the continuing Later Han Dynasty by Sima Biao ( 240-305 ) to rate. He commented on this work, and tied his eight monographs on 30 chapters in the Book of Later Han one. Thanks to this measure, the present editions of the Book of Later Han include 120 chapters.
