FantLab

The laboratory of Fantastik ( briefly Fantlab ) is a non-commercial Russian-language database, which was established in July 2004. In the database information about science fiction and fantasy writer, literary works, and magazines from around the world are collected. In September 2010, there were over 1700 entries authors (among Neil Gaiman, Herbert George Wells, JRR Tolkien, Mikhail Bulgakov Afanassjevitch, Franz Kafka, Michael Ende, Gustav Meyrink ). Currently ( 2011) (also including German ) worked on translations of the database into other languages.

Content

With the aim of completeness and reliability to provide data on fantastic literature are collected. The Fantlab contains bibliographic data not only from science fiction and fantasy authors, but also of writers who use the Fantastic only occasionally or in individual plants. The works are not commercially, everything is done by enthusiasts. The original texts may not be downloaded or read. But there are a few exceptions: some authors have given permission to offer your articles free to download (for example, stories about the founder of the Fantlab, Alexey Lvov).

Recommendations

The recommendations of the Fantlabs function based on social networks, similar to Last.fm. Every registered users can write reviews for books and write reviews. Because these reviews are " like-minded " and " antipodes " determined by other users. With like-minded people are users who have a similar taste in literature, the antipodes, however, are the users whose ratings differ greatly.

Genre classification

Advanced Fantlab users have access to the genre classification. Users can add any working day from seven areas:

  • Genre: Science fiction, fantasy, horror, mythical, etc.
  • General characteristics: adventurous, philosophical, psychological, etc.
  • Location of the event: the earth, other planets, parallel universes, etc.
  • Time of the event: from Neolithic times to the distant future.
  • Themes and motifs: vampires, alien invasion, artificial intelligence, etc.
  • Narrative action: linear, parallel, with branches etc.
  • Recommended age: for children and young people, for adults, for all ages.

The most common tags are displayed on the side of the work.

Rankings

Based on the user reviews the rankings of authors and works are created. Only the ratings of users taken into account, which have reached a certain rank - thus prevents unscrupulous user change the average rating of a work and thus influence the ranking placements.

Columns

A Fantlab - column is a blend of a blog and an article selection. Each user can write his own column. Many well-known writers (for example, Vadim Panov ), critics and journalists have a Fantlab - column.

Awards

  • 2009 Fantlab was awarded the " Strannik " award in the category " Best Website ".
  • 2010 received the Fantlab internet Roscon Prize as the best Russian -language Internet portal about Fantastik.
