Fara in Sabina

Fara in Sabina is a town with 12,542 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012) in the province of Rieti in the Italian region of Lazio.

Geography

Fara located 48 km north of Rome and 37 km south of Rieti. The old town is situated on the Monte Búzio, a hill in the Sabine hills above the Tiber valley. It is a member of the Comunità Montana Sabina. The municipality is bounded on the north and west of the rivers Tiber and Farfa.

The districts are Borgo Quinzio, Canneto Sabino, Coltodino, Corese Terra, Fara, Farfa, Passo Corese, Pomonte, Prime Case and Talocci. Passo Corese in the Tiber valley, with the station of Fara, is by far the largest district.

The municipality extends over a height of 23 m to 600 m slm

The municipality is located in the seismic zone 2 (medium endangered).

The nearby towns are Castelnuovo di Farfa, Monte Libretti (RM ), Montopoli di Sabina, Nerola (RM ), Toffia.

Traffic

Fara is 18 km away to Milan from the Roma Nord exit of the A1 motorway Autostrada del Sole of Rome. His station on the regional train line FR1 from Rome Fiumicino Airport via Tiburtina Rome to Orte is located 12 km from the center in the village of Passo Corese.

History

Fara is in the center of the ancient settlement area of the Sabines. One of its major cities, Cures, was at today's district Talocci.

The present town of Fara was founded in the 6th century by the Lombards. The name probably derives from the Lombard Fara Fara word ( " clan " ) ago.

Policy

Vincenzo Mazzeo (L' Unione ) was elected in May 2006 to the mayor. His center-left alliance also with 13 of 20 seats, the majority in the City Council.

Attractions

  • The municipality is the important Benedictine abbey of Farfa, which was founded in the 6th century and counted in the Middle Ages as an imperial abbey of the richest and most influential monasteries in Europe. The abbey was 1860/61 and 1928 secularized declared the Italian national monument. Since 1919/20, it is again Benedictine monastery.
  • From the ancient city of Cures, hometown of Numa Pompilius, a part of the forum was excavated.
  • From Castello di Postmontem from the 10th century was only the Torre Baccelli.
  • The Palazzo Orsini dates from the 15th century.
