Fargesia

Fargesia nitida in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco.

Fargesia is a genus of bamboo subtribe Arundinariinae.

Description

In this genus there are species of bamboo with plant height from 1.5 m to 6 m and Halmstärken to 3 cm. They can be recognized particularly in the number of its branches, 3 or more, the numerous small leaves and their narrow and lasting Halmscheiden. You have pachymorphe rhizomes and thus form clumps and no runners. They belong to the monocarpic plants that die off like many other kinds of bamboo after flowering and reproduce only by seeds. Sometimes it is possible to stimulate re-growth by cutting back to the ground. The flowering rhythm is 80 to 120 years.

The Fargesia species are very hardy and therefore widely used as ornamental plants in Europe. Since they do not form spurs, they can stand apart from other plant species without overgrow them. Propagation is by division of clumps.

Etymology

The name Fargesia reminiscent of the French missionary Paul Farges (1844-1912), who was active in western China.

Types (selection) and distribution

The genus consists of 83 to 90 species. At least 78 species are native to China, especially in western China in the regions of Sichuan, Yunnan, Gansu and Hubei. Of these, 77 are endemic species. Other species occur in Vietnam. They live at altitudes of about 1000 to 4000 m above sea level with a temperate climate.
