Farnese, Lazio

Farnese is a municipality with 1602 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Viterbo in the Italian region of Lazio.

Geography

Farnese is located 119 km northwest of Rome and 43 km north-west of Viterbo. It is in the volcanic hills of the southern Tuscia, on the western slopes of the Monti Volsini west of Lake Bolsena. A large part of its territory is occupied by the natural park Selva del Lamone.

The neighboring municipalities are Ischia di Castro, Pitigliano (GR) and Valentano.

Farnese is on the state road SS 312 Via Castrense that leads from Lake Bolsena to the Via Aurelia at Montalto di Castro, accessible.

History

The name derives from the ancient Farnese name Castrum Farneti (Castle of the oaks ). Farnia is the Italian name of the oak. The place was also the local lords Farnese family its name.

Policy

Alessandro Santi ( PdL ) was elected in June 2009 for the mayor. His center-right list is also available with 8 of 12 seats, the majority in the City Council. He replaced Dario Pomare (2004 - 2009) from, who did not run.
