Fasil Ghebbi

Fasil Ghebbi is a fortress city in the Gondar region of Ethiopia, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In the 16th and 17th century, the city was the residence of the Ethiopian emperor Fasilidas, who built a residence for the rainy season here. His followers built the city and palace on.

The city lies at an altitude of 2208 meters and is surrounded by a 900 m long fortification wall. It includes palaces, churches, monasteries and other public and private buildings.

The architecture shows Hindu and Arab influences, subsequently introduced by Jesuit missionaries elements of the Baroque.

After the capital was moved in the mid-19th century to Debre Tabor, the Fasil Ghebbi 1881 damaged by an attack by followers of the Mahdi and 1941 by British air attacks.
