Fathi Arafat

Fathi Arafat (Arabic فتحي عرفات, DMG Fathi ʿ Arafat, born January 11, 1933, Cairo, † December 1, 2004 ) was a Palestinian physician and co-founder of the Red Crescent. Fathi was the brother of Yasser Arafat.

Life

Fathi Arafat, a doctor by profession lived in Egypt, Kuwait and Jordan. He was a member of the Palestinian National Council and Honorary President of the Palestinian Red Crescent. In 1968 he was co-founder of the Red Crescent. Fathi Arafat established a Health Care for the scattered Palestinians in the Middle East. In 1994, after the Oslo Accords, he moved into the Gaza Strip and from then on worked for the newly created Palestinian management of his brother. In 2001 he resigned after onset of severe disease from office as president of the Palestinian Red Crescent.

Fathi Arafat died on 1 December 2004 at his home in Cairo from stomach cancer.
