Fatih Birol

Fatih Birol ( born March 22, 1958 in Ankara, Turkey) is a Turkish economist and currently Chief Economist at the International Energy Agency of the OECD in Paris (IEA).

Fatih Birol is responsible for the compilation and publication of the internationally respected world energy report World Energy Outlook, the central, published every year in November flagship publication of the IEA. He is also responsible for regularly informing the IEA management level about the economic impact of developments in the international energy and other industrial markets.

Dr. Birol earned his Bachelor of Science in Power Plant Engineering at the Technical University of Istanbul, his Master of Science and finally the PhD in Energy Economics at the Vienna University of Technology. For six years he worked in the Secretariat of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC ) in Vienna, before he joined the IEA in Paris in 1995. Birol regularly publishes articles and essays on issues of international energy situation and the international politics and is active worldwide as a speaker on these issues.

In March 2010, he was in the documentary The 4th Revolution - to see EnergyAutonomy.

Prizes and awards

In June 2005, Birol received the award for outstanding professional achievements of the International Association of Energy Economics.

In October 2006 he was appointed by the French government to the " Chevalier dans l' Ordre des Palmes Académiques ". In March 2007, he was awarded the Golden Medal of the Austrian Republic in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the understanding of global energy problems.

On November 19, 2009 by the German State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology, Jochen Homann, the right conferred by the Federal President of Merit 1st class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany to Birol presented.

This Birols services to the Federal Republic of Germany in connection with his outstanding work as head of the " economic analysis " of the IEA are appreciated.

State Secretary Homann stressed in the Order of Merit that especially the had become under the leadership of Dr. Birol annual World Energy Outlook developed because of its comprehensive, current and unbiased approach to an important reference for the German energy and climate policy.
