Fatos Nano

Fatos Nano ( born September 16, 1952 in Tirana) is an Albanian politician. From 1991 to 2005 he was chairman of the Socialist Party and in that time several times also Prime Minister.

Studies and professional life

Fatos Nano studied political economy at the University of Tirana. In the same place he also earned doctoral degrees in philosophy and economics. From 1975 to 1978 he worked in the Metallurgical Combine at Elbasan from 1981 to 1983, he worked for an agricultural cooperative. From 1978 to 1981 and then from 1984 until the political changes in 1990, he was employed at the Institute of Marxism -Leninism in Tirana.

Nano as a politician

The end of 1990, in the last months of the communist regime, he was taken by the former heads of state and party leader Ramiz Alia in the government of Adil Carcani, as late sign of willingness to reform the Communist Workers Party. In February 1991, Nano was appointed head of government. The first multi-party elections on 31 March 1991, won by his party. In the cities, however, where the opposition could win the most votes, the mass protests of the population continued until Nano a few months later resigned from his post and a government was formed under his party comrades Ylli Bufi with the participation of the opposition.

In June 1991, the Communist Workers' Party changed its name to Socialist Party and Nano became chairman. After the elections of 22 March 1992 he was leader of the opposition until he came due to the use of State funds on 30 July 1993 in jail. Many referred to his conviction for a multi-year prison sentence as politically motivated. During the civil war-like conditions in 1997, Nano was released and pardoned by the outgoing President Sali Berisha and political opponents.

After the Socialist Party won the elections in 1997, Nano was appointed by President Rexhep Meidani prime minister. Following public unrest in 1998, organized for the murder of opposition leader Azem Hajdari of the Democratic Party, he resigned as Prime Minister and party leader and left the first official 31- year-old socialists Pandeli Majko.
