Fauces (architecture)

The fauces ( plural) are a part of the atrium house, a dwelling house of the Italian type.

It is in the fauces to the corridor leading from the front door (or a small anteroom at this ) to the atrium. Fauces are mentioned by Vitruvius (Book 6, III.6 ). Accordingly, they should be one-third less in homes with small atrium as the tablinum. In houses with large atrium they should be half as wide as the tablinum.
