Faun is a German pagan folk group from Graefelfing near Munich.

History

The band was founded by Oliver Pade, Birgit Muggenthaler and Werner Schwab 1999. 2000 Muggenthaler left the band again, but was still present on the debut album spells. Another guest musician Niel Mitra, who later became a member of the band was. The second CD light caused a big popularity boost, especially in the black scene many new listeners were added. In the scene magazines Orcus and the Zillo CD received excellent reviews and in the former it was also CD of the Month February 2004. Publication in Rüdiger Maul and Niel Mitra are also added as a regular band members. In February 2008, Endeavour announced on its website that Elizabeth Pawelke 'll leave the band to the March of the year in order to devote himself entirely to her vocal studies in Basel. At the same time Sandra Elflein was announced as a future member.

After saying goodbye to Elisabeth Pawelke and the replacement by Sandra Elflein in 2008, the band toured in spring 2009 strengthened with their unplugged program in churches and halls. This was the first Unplugged tour; in the previous years since the album light these concerts were only comparatively rarely played. The extensive tour followed in November, the acoustic album book of ballads. It was followed in early 2010 again an acoustic tour, which brought almost all the songs from the book of ballads to the stage. Even before the end of the tour left Sandra Elflein in April 2010, the band because of her pregnancy and health complications. After the upcoming festival in May 2010 and market concerts were played with four musicians, Faun announced in June Margarete " Rairda " Eibl as a new member of the band.

After the summer concerts followed by another acoustic tour, on which many songs were presented in new releases by popular demand. Also gave the band announced that the ongoing now since 2007, work on the new "plugged " album in Spring 2011 to be completed in the studio. After the start of the festival season 2011 was published on 24 June of the year the new album Eden. In 2013, the band released the album From the Elves in the major label Universal Music. Unlike the previous measures, the publication was therefore accompanied by extensive advertising. This also included an appearance on the TV show Willkommen bei Carmen Nebel. The album also contains a collaboration with the band Santiano that is commercially very successful with a mixture of folk, pop and shanties. This piece was described by the magazine Zillo Medieval as a " total failure ". Otherwise, the album was described as accessible and pop. Compared to the previous albums, there are fewer long instrumental parts. Most of the pieces are shorter than four minutes.

At the request of Valicon, the producer of the album, who had previously worked with Lena Meyer -Landrut and silver moon, the work on the album designed differently than usual by the band so far. Total should be composed, under which the producers wanted then select the From the Elves more than 30 songs. Unlike the previous works all the songs by the band were not even written. Instead, external songwriters were used.

This development of the band was sharply criticized by the fans. The band responded with a statement in which she stressed to himself remained true, even if the first album on a major label would require musical compromises.

Style

Music

To her love of nature to express the group Faun has for one of their concerts types coined the term " Paganfolk ". Initially used only as a term of electronically amplified concert, this term is now used by fans and band for the music style itself. The repertoire ranges from melancholic ballads to exuberant dance songs such as the Breton Andro. On the one hand, historical songs from different eras and regions are set to music and on the other hand also written many original compositions. For example, Faun old perso - Arabic melodies take on the Swedish nyckelharpa and Middle High German vocals. Also indicative of the Faun are mostly two-part singing of Rairda and Fiona as well as in more recent publications of the driving beat of Niel Mitra.

The debut album spells deals thematically especially with quiet ballads from the period between the late Middle Ages and romance. It is kept completely acoustic and does not require newer instruments or driving electronic beats. On the second album much less ballad- like pieces are represented. Has greatly increased while the proportion of danceable tunes such as Andro, Unda or the double song Deva / Punagra. On their third album, Renaissance, Faun devoted to the theme of death and rebirth. Their fourth album Totem is about the overcoming of abysses and volunteers who have been on this journey. In 2007, to an extensive club tour was organized and recorded the live DVD ornament. For Totem album was released in a limited edition of 1,000 pieces special edition that contains a bonus of more detailed booklet also the title two hawks in an unplugged version, which differs significantly from the version on the regular album. The album includes, in comparison to the others, the most complete self-written pieces of Faun.

The acoustic album Book of Ballads consistently revolves around German -language ballads. The Nibelungenlied is taken up as a concept. In addition to the standard version of the album with songs about mermen, trolls, and enchanted knights a limited edition came out with the bonus tracks Brynhild's Song, a 10-minute story about the end of the dragon slayer Siegfried and his lover, accompanied by light beats and jaw harp and nyckelharpa.

The 2011 released album Eden is dedicated to the mythological conceptions of paradise from the perspective of different cultures and eras, combining ancient instruments with modern electronic beats.

The album of the same, which was released in early 2013, contains influences from folk music and medieval rock area. The fan base rejected these influences from partially vehemently. The outcry was so strong that Oliver Pade felt compelled to turn a Facebook page on which he explained the album.

The texts of Faun come from very different languages, including the present and the Middle High German, Spanish or Ladino, Old Icelandic, Latin, Hungarian, Finnish and Turkish.

Meaning of the name

The name Faun comes from the Greco- Roman mythology, where it has its counterpart in the shepherd god Faunus or Pan. According to its own statement that the group this, figure often depicted as a nature or forest spirit symbolizes the closeness to nature of the band members and their music. For the same reason the pseudonym of Oliver Pade is the Faunus related satyr.
