Faustus of Mileve

Faustus of Mileve (c. 350 in Mileve ( Numidia, North Africa ); † before 400 in exile ) is the most important representatives of Western Manichaeism.

Life

About his life little is known. As a child of poor parents grew up, he could get training in later years in Rome. Augustine of Hippo, the internally already on Manichaeism ( which he belonged since 373 as an auditor ) had begun to doubt Faustus met by Mileve who came to Carthage after a long teaching career in Rome 383, but was disappointed in him. This led finally brought Augustine's inner break with the Manichaeism, which then soon the outer followed.

Faustus of Mileve was later banished to an island; there he wrote an apology of Manichaeism, in which he rejected the entire Old Testament, the story of the birth of Jesus and some writings of Paul, and resurrection of Christ interpreted as allegory. This work has not survived, but are from extensive passages quoted in the to its refutation written by Augustine font Contra Faustum libri XXIII, ( ie by the presumed death of the Faustus of Mileve ) which he wrote 400 and 404 sent to Jerome.

These and other writings of Augustine are almost the only source on the life and work of Faustus. You are to enjoy because of the opposition of the author to Faustus and Manichaeism with caution.
