Favara, Sicily

Favara is a city in the province of Agrigento in the Italian region Sicily.

Location and data

Favara is located 11 km east of Agrigento. Here live 33 007 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012), who mainly work in agriculture. It is grown and processed in addition to cereals, oranges, watermelons, almonds, pistachios, olives and wine.

The neighboring municipalities are Agrigento, Aragona, Castrofilippo, Comitini, Naro and Racalmuto.

History

The name comes from the Arabic Favara time. The name comes from Fawwara, which is Arabic and means water source. The present town was built in the 13th century to the built in this century castle. At this time the village belonged to the Chiaramonte family.

With the Spanish city of Andújar in Andalusia Favara maintains since 2004 a city partnership.
