Favorita (grape)

Favorita is an indigenous white grape variety of the Italian region of Piedmont. It is cultivated in small herds of about 40 hectares in the regions of Roero and Langhe Alessandria, Asti and Cuneo in the provinces. In particular, in the municipality of Corneliano d' Alba were located according to Norberto Marzotto even larger plantings. In the markets of Turin and Genoa, the Favorita is also often sold as a table grape. The wine produced is used in blends with other varieties.

DNA tests in Turin gave the grape variety with Vermentino and Pigato is identical.

Synonyms

The Favorita grape is also known under the name Favorita bianca di Favorita Alba and Vermentino.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In the ampelography the habit is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is starkwollig hairy whitish and provided with a crimson trace. The bright green young leaves are hairy slightly woolly.
  • The medium-sized leaves ( see also the article sheet form) are indented five lobes and deep. The petiole is closed lyre -shaped with overlapping ends. The sheet is cut sharply. The teeth are enggesetzt and small compared to the varieties. The leaf surface (also called lamina ) is hardly bubbly.
  • The cylindrical to conical grape is medium sized and moderately dichtbeerig. The roundish berries are large and yellow in color, which varies from amber. The bowl of the crunchy berry is thick.

Favorita matures about 30 days after Chasselas and thus belongs to the late-ripening varieties. In Turin, the variety can be harvested in mid-September to early October.
