Faxes [ fɑgsə ] (formerly written Faxe ) is a small town in the region of Sjælland on the Danish island of Zealand ( Sjælland ).

Since the 2007 local government reform faxes belongs to the newly created municipality faxes. Has faxes even 3828 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013), whereas the municipality counts 35 123 inhabitants on a total of 405 km ². This fax is neither the administrative headquarters, still the largest town of the faxes municipality: both are Haslev.

The name of faxes (formerly also Faxæ, Faza ) is Old Norse and means horse's mane, derived from the location of the city on a mountain range.

History

From faxes came the chief's son Rollo, conquered by 900 the country in the Seine estuary. The first mention of the city in 1280. One of the oldest building is the church, which was built in 1440. 1577 burned the church and parsonage, but were rebuilt. In faxes is the oldest elementary school in Denmark, a half-timbered building from the year 1633rd

Already in 1864 a railway line between the limestone quarries and the harbor faxes Ladeplads was built. 1879 received faxes with the Eastern Railway Following the Danish railway network. 1880 both lines were connected. In 1900 the city received a waterworks, a pharmacy until 1904 and 1908, the City Hall.

East of the city are limestone quarries ( Faxekalk ). Since the 13th century limestone is broken here; since the 17th century also burned lime. 1901, the brewery was founded in faxes faxes that now the Royal Unibrew belongs.

In the period from 1 April 1970 to 31 December 2006 faxes belonged to Faxe municipality in Storstrøms office since 1 January 2007, the city is part of the commune in the faxes Zealand.
