Faycelles

Faycelles ( Occitan: Faicelas ) is a southern French village with 629 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Lot in the Midi-Pyrénées region. It is part of the Regional Natural Park of Causses du Quercy.

Location

Faycelles is located about one kilometer north of the Lot valley in the ancient landscape of the Quercy at an altitude of about 300 meters above sea level. inst on the southwestern edge of the Massif Central. The nearest town is about eight km ( driving distance ) northeast Figeac; the town of Cahors is located about 68 kilometers west.

Demographics

In the 19th century the place had mostly 1000-1300 inhabitants. As a result of the phylloxera crisis in the wine and the mechanization of agriculture, the population declined steadily in the first half of the 20th century back to the lows of the 1960s and 1970s.

Economy

In skin -Quercy agriculture was operated primarily for self-catering, which included the wine until the 19th century, but was abandoned almost entirely after the phylloxera crisis. Today - in addition agriculture, small trade and crafts - the tourism in the form of apartment rentals ( gîtes ) play an important role in the economic life of the community.

History

In the 8th century Faycelles lay directly on the north bank of the Lot; later, it was at the foot of the castle (château ) rebuilt. The village was situated on the main route of the Camino de Santiago ( Via Podiensis ). In the 17th century the castle was razed.
