Fayence

Fayence is a commune with 5285 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Var department in the Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur.

Geography

Fayence is located right on the edge of the Southern Alps, which rise on the territory of the municipality up to 665 m, at the edge of a scoring to the Plan de Provence, extensive plain. Geologically, the soil is determined in part by limestone, grow on the oak, in other parts there of granite before, there are cork oaks and pines to be found.

History

Pottery was first mentioned in the year 909 with the name Fagentia. In the year 1119 a source called the place Favenza. The name comes from the Latin name Faventia Loca ( advantageous place ) and thus points already on the settlement in Roman times out. In the 12th century gave Alfonso I of Aragon faience the Bishops of Fréjus fief, who built a castle there, which stood until the 18th century when it was destroyed because it was considered expensive and useless.

Attractions

  • The Chateau of the Bishops of Fréjus dates from the 12th century.
  • The chapel Chapelle Notre Dame des Cyprès was built in the 15th century.
  • The church of St Jean -Baptiste from the 18th century has a Saracen gate. On the bell tower, a lookout point with an orientation table is set up, which gives an overview of the entire department of Var.
  • The tourist office organizes regular guided tours of the ancient village of Fayence.

Leisure

  • In Fayence is the first European Gliding Centre. The airfield faience Tourrettes celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2005. The resident club ( AAPCA ) is one of the largest gliding clubs in France. Earthenware was inter alia sail aeronautically famous because here the wave flight was discovered for gliding. On November 16, 1947 Daniel Soyez accidentally discovered a wave flow, which carried him up to 3800 meters in altitude. Landi Jules and Marcel Giovanini up shortly thereafter with a Castel 253 to 6000 meters. Cold and lack of oxygen forced them to flight termination; but Faience was discovered for the wave flight and a new dimension of gliding started, which should attract the glider from Germany soon.
  • For hikers and mountain bikers an extensive network of trails has been created. In the Lac de Saint -Cassien diving enthusiasts find a suitable infrastructure. In addition, there are offers for horseback, canyoning and relaxing holiday.

Culture

During the year, numerous events and exhibitions are organized:

  • The Fête du pain (bread ( acquisition ) fixed) will be held in odd-numbered years on the first Sunday of July. The citizens of Fayence dress as it was common a hundred years ago, show the old crafts and old games. In all the streets of the village scenes and traditional Provencal folklore are listed.
  • The major festival of the string quartets (Festival de quatuors à cordes ) takes place in the last week of October. This is where the string world-class and give concerts in the churches of the Pays de Fayence.
  • The pilgrimage to Notre- Dame-des- Cyprès with the traditional Farandole lasts four days.
