The Fayette County is a county located in the U.S. state of Illinois. In 2010, the County had 22,140 inhabitants and a population density of 11.9 inhabitants per square kilometer. The the county seat ( county seat ) is in Vandalia.

Geography

History

The Fayette County was formed February 14, 1821 from parts of the Bon, Clark and Crawford counties and named after Marie -Joseph Motier, Marquis de La Fayette, who helped the French colonists in the Revolutionary War against the British.

Towards the end of 1834 began Abraham Lincoln, who later became the 16th President of the United States, his career as a lawyer in this county.
