Fayette County (Indiana)

Fayette County is a county located in the U.S. state of Indiana in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Connersville.

Geography

The County is located in the central south-east of Indiana, is in the east about 40 km away from Ohio and has an area of 557 square kilometers without significant water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Henry County, Wayne County, Union County, Franklin County and Rush County.

History

Fayette County was formed on December 28, 1818 from parts of Franklin County and Wayne County. It was named after Marie -Joseph Motier, Marquis de La Fayette, a general in the American Revolutionary War.

According to the census in 2000, lived in Fayette County 25,588 people in 10,199 households and 7,149 families. The population density was 46 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 97.16 percent White, 1.67 percent African American, 0.09 percent Native American, 0.27 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.13 percent from other races groups; 0.66 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.52 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 10,199 households out of which 30.8 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 55.6 percent were married couples living together, 10.2 percent were single mothers and 29.9 percent were non-families. 25.8 percent of all households and 12.3 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 2.94.

24.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.6 percent between 18 to 24, 27.1 percent between 25 and 44 years. 24.5 percent between 45 and 64 and 15.5 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 94 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 90.7 males.

The median income for a household was $ 38,840, and the median income for a family $ 46,111. Males have a median income of $ 34,493, women $ 23,082. The per capita income was $ 18,624. 6.0 percent of families and 7.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
