Fayetteville is a city in Fayette County, Georgia, United States. In the census of 2000 the city had a population of 11,148. According to estimates from the year 2005, the population was in this year at 14,363. The city is the county seat of Fayette County. Fayetteville is located approximately 35 miles from Atlanta. Due to the urban sprawl of Atlanta in the last decade the place was regarded as a commuter town and lately as a suburb of Atlanta.

Demography

In the census of 2000, there were 11,148 people, 4,338 households, and 2,967 families living in the city. The population density was 435 per km ².

There were 4,338 households out of which 36.0 percent of children lived in 18 years. 53.9 percent were married couples living together. 11.8 percent had a housekeeper without a husband lived in the household, and 31.6 percent were "non- families ". 27.2 percent of all households were individuals, and 11.2 percent lived in someone alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size is 3.04.

The per capita income for the city was 26,551 U.S. dollars. Approximately 2.4 percent of families and 3.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line, including 2.1 percent of those under age 18 and 8.8 percent of those aged 65 years and above.

Education

Fayette County High School and Whitewater High School are high schools, which serve Fayetteville and its surroundings. The two schools are part of the Association of Schools of Fayette County.

Attractions

  • The Fayette County Courthouse was built in 1825, just four years after the founding of the county and the city and is the oldest existing Courthouse in Georgia. The Courthouse is located in the middle of the main square of Fayetteville and now houses the Chamber of Commerce and the Fayette County Development Authority.
  • The Holliday - Dorsey - Fife House was built by John Stiles Holliday, the uncle of the famous western gambler John Henry " Doc" Holliday in 1855.
  • The Margaret Mitchell Library, built in 1948, is now used by the Fayette County Historical Society. Here civil war and genealogical records are kept.
