Fayetteville is an American small town in Lincoln County in southern Tennessee. It is the county seat of Lincoln County. Fayetteville has about 7,000 inhabitants in an area of 19.0 square kilometers.

History

Fayetteville was founded in 1809. The city is named after Fayetteville in North Carolina.

Demography

Data obtained from the census in 2000 6.994 inhabitants of Fayetteville lived in 3,054 households; among them were 1,804 families. The population density was 368 per square kilometer. In place 3,370 residential units were recorded. Among the population was 71.4 percent white, 26.2 percent African American, 0.3 percent American Indian, 0.3 percent Asian and 0.4 percent of other ethnic groups; 1.4 percent reported belonging to several ethnic groups.

Among the 3,054 households 24.5 percent of children were under 18 years; 37.8 percent were single-person households. The average household size was 2.14 and the average family size 2.81 persons.

The population was spread out with 21.2 percent under the age of 18, 8.1 percent from 18 to 24 years, 22.9 percent 25-44 years, 22.1 percent from 45 to 64 years and 25.7 percent of 65 years or older. The median age was 43 years.

The median household income was $ 23,830, the median family income $ 32,477. The per capita income in Fayetteville was $ 18,391. Under the poverty line, 20.8 percent of the population lived.
