Fazil Iskander

Fasil Iskander Abdulowitsch (Russian Фазиль Абдулович Искандер; born March 6, 1929 in Sukhum ) is an Abkhaz writer who writes exclusively in Russian and now lives in Moscow.

Family, education and the beginning of the professional activity

His father, who operated a brick factory that was of Iranian descent, his mother Abchasierin. The father was expelled in 1938 along with other Iranian-born persons from the USSR. Fasil Iskander grew up in Abkhazia with relatives of his mother.

From 1947, he studied in Moscow at the Institute of Library Science, but then switched in 1951 to the Gorky Institute of Literature, where he graduated in 1954.

Between 1954 and 1956 he worked at the newspaper " Komsomolets Brjanski " in Bryansk, then at the " Kurskaja Pravda " in Kursk and from 1956 in Sukhumi as an editor of the Abkhazian branch of the Soviet state publishing house. There he worked until the early 90s.

Work as a writer

In 1952 his first poems were printed. The first volume of poetry appeared in 1957 in Sukhumi, followed by a second in 1959. Prose he wrote from 1962. His works have been published in various literary journals.
