FC Atyrau

The FK Atyrau ( Kazakh: Атырау Футбол Клубы, Russian Атырау футбольный клуб ) is a Kazakh football club based in the city, in western Kazakhstan city of Atyrau.

History

Name development

The club was founded in 1978 under the name Prikaspijez Gurjev ( Прикаспиец Гурьев ). In 2000 it was renamed FK Atyrau ( ФК Атырау ).

Soviet Championship

In the first two years after the founding of the club participated only in the regional championship. In 1980 the team was inducted into the third-highest Soviet league. After two disappointing seasons, the club was disbanded again in the year 1981.

Kazakh Cup

In 2000 the club was reactivated in the second Kazakh league. Since 2001, the club plays in the Kazakh Premjer League. Two times in 2001 with eleven points on Schenis Astana and 2002 with eight points behind Irtysh Pavlodar the runner-up was achieved. In the following three seasons, the team slipped into mediocrity. In the years 2006 to 2008, the FK Atyrau played for the whereabouts of the highest Kazakh league. In the 2009 season the team won the sixth. In the same year also the first national cup victory was celebrated, as in the final Shakhtar Karaganda was defeated in the capital's Astana Arena 1-0.

Stadium

The club plays its home matches at the 8,690 -seat Munaischy Stadium, which was built back in 1954.

Participations in UEFA competitions

The club took part in the qualification for the UEFA Cup 2002/ 03. In the first round the team retired to the Slovak participants Matador Púchov out after 0-0 and 0-2. In the following season, the team was also thrown out in the first qualifying round of the UEFA Cup 2003/ 04 of Levski Sofia from Bulgaria to 1:4 and 0:2. The third appearance on the European stage ended unsuccessfully for the club from Atyrau as both games against the Hungarian Gyori ETO FC kontahenten were lost.
