FC Slovan Liberec

FC Slovan Liberec ( officially: FC Slovan Liberec as) is a Czech football club from the North Bohemian town of Liberec.

History

The club TJ Slovan Liberec was founded on July 12, 1958, when Jiskra Liberec and Slavoj Liberec merged. Jiskra emerged from the 1910 founded SK Sparta Upper Rosenthal. Slavoj other hand, was created in 1953 as a successor of the company founded in 1945 Čechie SK Liberec.

Sparta Upper Rosenthal was not two years. 1912, the successor FK Rapid Upper Rosenthal was launched. About ten years later took over the former Czech minority the club, who took henceforth as SK Rapid Horni Růžodol.

The playing in green and white shirts team succeeded in 1928, the rise in the highest amateur league. As a result of the Munich Agreement of September 1938, all Czech organizations and associations was dissolved.

The re- establishment as a Rapid Liberec followed immediately after the end of World War II, 1945. Rapid was divided into the fourth highest league from which the team was 1947/48 rise. The first place in the autumn of 1948, however, was of no value, since this round was played only to then play in the calendar year mode. 1949 Rapid became champion, but remained mediocre, because a new nationwide second league was founded.

This year, the club was renamed Kolora Liberec. In the season 1951 Kolora was but second-rate addition to 200 other clubs, as the nationwide second league was abolished after just one season. A year later the team won their group and played in qualifying for the first league. There, the team prevailed with four wins.

The rise was, however, denied Kolora yet. The communist rulers put through a total reorganization of the Czech football. Clubs came after because of their seniority in the first division. In Liberec DSO Slavoj was founded as representatives of the food industry. The squad of Kolora Liberec should join the new club, but most players and stood against this decision. Slavoj was thus able to put together any erstligataugliche team. Nine defeats in 13 games meant for Slavoj finally the descent.

Kolora 1953 again renamed and now antretend as Jiskra Liberec, abolished in 1954, but made ​​it into the top division. Only seven points from 22 games and the last place in the table showed that the team but was clearly overwhelmed.

Jiskra Liberec merged in 1956 with two other clubs in the city, Slovan and TJ Lokomotiva Lokomotiva Liberec. A year later, the club returned to the name TJ Jiskra.

Finally it came to the 1956 merger of Jiskra and Slavoj, the new club was named TJ Slovan Liberec.

Also Slovan played for many years in the lower leagues, only in 1970 after the rise in the second league of the former Czechoslovakia. Until the dissolution of the CSFR, the club played in the second time, sometimes in the third division.

1993, when the founding of an independent sovereign Czech Republic Czech league was also introduced, the club reached the summit in the first league, from which he has since not descended. In the 1990s, Slovan Liberec reached a place mostly in the upper middle of the table. 2002 Slovan Liberec Czech football champions was the first non -Prager team. In the following season 2002/ 03 the team finished fourth. In the season 2004/ 05 the club were deducted as a result of a league -wide corruption scandal six points. Although Slovan reached with 46 points in fifth place, but missed by the point deduction - Sigma Olomouc than in fourth had 51 counters - participation in the UEFA Intertoto Cup. 2006 Slovan Liberec was five points clear at Mladá Boleslav for the second time Czech champion.

The following year joined the team from game to rank four and qualified thus for the Intertoto Cup. There, however, one difference already in the second round with 1:1 and 0:2 against the Kazakh representative Tobol Qostanai.

In the 2007 /08 season, the team reached the final of the Czech Cup, which, however, with 3:4 lost on penalties against Sparta Prague.

In 2012 the FC Slovan managed for the third time the Czech Championship. Under coach Jaroslav Šilhavý the Liberec won the last game of the season the championship with a 0-0 draw against Viktoria Plzen.

Therefore was allowed to start the 2012/13 FC Slovan Liberec in qualifying for the UEFA Champions League. In the second qualifying round of the Kazakh champion Shakhtar Karaganda was almost defeated after extra time in the second leg. However, towards the Czech champions CFR Cluj had no chance and lost both games. Then the team in the playoffs of the Europa League was allowed to play against Ukrainian club Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk. After a 2-2 home the team lost to Jiří Štajner 4-2 in Ukraine and thus was not allowed to participate in the group stage.

2013/14 took Slovan again participate in the elimination round of the Europa League. After the club was able to prevail in the qualifying rounds in a row against Skonto Riga, FC Zurich and Udinese Calcio, he met in the group H on the SC Freiburg, Sevilla FC and GD Estoril Praia on. There, the team took second place and now takes in the sixteenth final against AZ Alkmaar.

Club name

Founded in 1958 as TJ Slovan Liberec, the club was called from 1980 TJ Slovan Liberec Elitex. More name changes, there were 1993 FC Slovan Liberec, in the same year in FC Slovan WSK Liberec (WSK was an abbreviation for Wimpey - Severokámen, a club sponsor) and only a year later, in 1994, in FC Slovan WSK Vratislav ( Vratislav is a brand of beer ) Liberec. In 1995 the club returned to the designation FC Slovan Liberec.
