FDI World Dental Federation

The FDI World Dental Federation ( FDI) is the international professional association of dentists based in Geneva, Switzerland.

History

The FDI was founded in 1900 as the Fédération Dentaire Internationale by Charles Godon from the Ecole Dentaire de Paris and five other dentists in Paris Florestan Aguilar from Madrid, Spain, George Cunningham of Cambridge, England, Elof Förberg from Stockholm, Sweden, AW Harlan from Chicago, Illinois, USA and E. Sauvez from Paris, France. These men were elected along with Drs L. Grevers (Netherlands), F. Hesse ( Germany ) and Pichler ( Austria ) to the first board of directors. The FDI is one of the oldest international professional associations in the world.

The FDI currently has more than 150 national member associations in more than 130 countries, which together represent almost one million dentists. President of the company is Tin Chun Wong ( China). (As of 2014)

Organization of FDI

Delegates of member organizations choose in a General Council of the FDI, which is responsible for the administration responsible.

Five standing committees are responsible for communication and membership support, dental practice, training and science and oral health development and health promotion.

The FDI has official relations with the United Nations (UN ) and the World Health Organization ( WHO) whose goal it supports, to promote dental health worldwide.

It is - in addition to the World Federation of Nurses, the International Pharmaceutical Federation and the World Medical Association - Member of the World Health Professions Alliance.

Objectives of FDI

The FDI has the vision to lead the world to optimal oral health and has therefore set itself the following tasks:

  • To be the global, authoritative and independent spokesperson for dentistry
  • To promote the interests of member associations and their members
  • An optimal oral and general health support for all people
  • To promote the ethics, art, science and practice of dentistry and support
  • To raise awareness of the political leaders that there is a direct relationship between health and physical health in the mouth as a whole
  • To promote the education of the population in underprivileged countries in the field of oral hygiene and oral health using appropriate strategies and the development of private and public partnerships
  • To reduce differences in the level and quality of oral health through the implementation of effective measures to promote oral health

The FDI develops and disseminates policy positions, standards, and information on all aspects of oral health worldwide. FDI Policy Statements reflect the current knowledge and state of knowledge on numerous topics related to oral health, oral health policy and the dental profession again.

The FDI offers a unique network of members, partners and representatives of the public health and works in cooperation with the WHO in the publication of scientific and enlightening reference documents.

World Oral Health Day

The World Oral Health Day (World Oral Health Day, WOHD ) is celebrated every year on March 20. It goes back to a decision of the General Assembly of the FDI in 2007 during World Dental Congress in Dubai. Originally September 12 was intended, on the birthday of the founding father of FDI Charles Godon. Later, the date was moved to March 20, from practical considerations. In 2013 the day was celebrated in 38 countries ..
