Fea's Petrel

The Cape Verde Petrel ( Pterodroma feae ) is a bird species of the order Procellariiformes ( Procellariiformes ). The knowledge of this seabird is quite low.

Mark

Cape Verde Petrel has almost completely dark under wing-coverts, a (brown ) gray top with those dark W - pattern, a solid light gray upper tail, and gray washed sides of the chest. The bird reaches a length of 33-36 cm and a wingspan of 86-94 cm. The vocalizations of this tube nose can only be heard at night in the colonies: Wailing sounds that are sometimes ended with an almost hicks tone.

Problems in determining and possibilities of confusion

At detection of this kind of confounding factors can not be underestimated: the W - pattern is often not identifiable by too great a distance or unfavorable lighting conditions. There are also some species with those of the Cape Verde Petrel may be confused if the observation time is relatively short only, or an exact species knowledge is missing: The bird reminds the case of poorly inspection at a small Cory's shearwater ( Calonectris diomedea ), which but a purely white underside has. However, it is virtually indistinguishable from the Zino's petrel ( Pterodroma madeira), whose beak looks a bit smaller. In addition, the head of the sister species to look a bit brighter, but this is hardly noticeable when observing.

Dissemination

The Cape Verde Petrel breeds, as the name says, in Cape Verde, but also on Madeira ( Bugio ). The breeding colonies are very small and are usually found together in the late summer / autumn to breed.
