Feature data

As a feature (English Feature ) is the smallest, professionally meaningful unit is called within a geospatial dataset in a geographic information system (GIS). Feature can be used in this context easiest translated as -object. Mailbox objects in geographic information systems have usually over a spatial reference, which is specified by coordinates. These can be generated by digitizing points, for example.

The structure of features in geographic information systems has become internationally standardized ( see, eg, the Open Geospatial Consortium) and given by the General Feature Model.
