Federal Agricultural Research Centre

The Federal Agricultural Research Centre (FAL) was a federal agency under the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (BMELV ). On 1 January 2008, the Institute of FAL on the Johann Heinrich von Thünen- Institute, the Julius Kühn- Institut and the Friedrich- Loeffler- Institute were divided. Predecessor was 1949-1976, the Agricultural Research Centre in Braunschweig also.

The FAL was concerned with the provision of scientific bases on agriculture for the policy and the creation of new knowledge for agriculture in the Federal Republic of Germany. The institution had its headquarters in Braunschweig in north-west district Völkenrode. At three other locations in Lower Saxony and Schleswig -Holstein she entertained a total of twelve institutes and research facilities. President, Hans -Joachim Weigel, Vice President Axel Munack (as of 2007). The location in Celle was closed during the rearrangement.

Research Areas

  • The Federal Agricultural Research Centre was divided into four regions with respective institutions: Soil / plant ( Plant Nutrition and Soil Science, Crop and Grassland Science, Agroecology )
  • Animal ( animal nutrition, animal breeding, animal welfare and animal husbandry )
  • Technology ( Technology and Biosystems Engineering, Production Engineering and Building )
  • Agricultural Economics ( Business Administration, Rural Areas, Market Analysis and Agricultural Trade Policy )

There was also a cross-divisional Institute of Organic Farming in Trenthorst (Schleswig -Holstein).
