Federation of European Microbiological Societies

The Federation of European Microbiological Societies ( FEMS ) is an umbrella organization of European microbiological research institutions and organizations. It consists of 46 members from 36 countries.

The current President is Bernhard Schink of the University of Konstanz. The central office is located in Delft in the Netherlands.

History

The first European union of microbiological societies was founded in 1968, the North - West European Microbiology Group ( NWEMG ), which was geographically limited to northern and western Europe. Before this merger microbiological societies were united under the umbrella of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS ).

1973 was organized with the financial support of the Society for General Microbiology (SGM ) is a planning meeting for the establishment of FEMS in Paris. Representatives were present from 13 interested companies, 9 of which agreed on the establishment of the FEMS At this meeting. The Rules were constructed on the basis of FEBS, the office was established at the SGM. For the first official meeting, a provisional management committee was founded and organized the meeting in August 1974 and invited to all European microbiological societies. On 22 November, was André Lwoff, Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1964, elected as President of the Association.

In August 1976, the first symposium of the Society was held under the theme " photosynthetic prokaryotes " at the University of Dundee in Scotland instead. In November and December of the same year followed each another on " Gonorrhea " at the Zoological Society of London and " Exotic and resistance plasmids " at the Institut Pasteur in Paris. Since then, every year several symposia were held, in 2001 there were a total of 15 that were supported with amounts 6000-12300 euros.

Financing

The Company's financing is done on the basis of membership fees, income from publications and events of the company.

Publications

The Federation of European Microbiological Societies was editor of the journal FEMS Microbiology, originally appeared as a single title. Today, the company publishes five individual titles:

  • FEMS microbiology letters
  • FEMS microbiology reviews
  • FEMS immunology and medical microbiology
  • FEMS microbiology ecology
  • FEMS yeast research

Originally, the publications by Elsevier for the company were sold today run by Wiley -Blackwell.
