Federico Chávez

Federico Chaves Careaga (* February 15, 1882 in Paraguarí, † April 24, 1978 in Asunción ) was a Paraguayan politician and soldier who was 1954 President of Paraguay from September 11, 1949 until May 5. He was a member of the Colorado Party.

Life

He was born on 15 February 1882 as a son of the Portuguese Federico Chaves and his Paraguayan wife Felicia Caraega in Paraguarí and a doctorate later.

Chaves was for many years chairman of the Colorado Party. When his party participated in a coalition government, he became a judge at the Supreme Court. Then Chaves was Foreign Minister of Paraguay. At the request of the Colorado Party, his predecessor left office down and Chávez was sworn in on September 10, as the successor and ruled on 11 September 1949 to 15 August 1953 as provisional president. After his election, he was from the August 15, 1953 Constitutional President. As Chaves armed the National Police to strengthen his regime, the armed forces of Paraguay coup led by General Alfredo Stroessner. On May 5, ended the presidency of Chaves.

Chaves died in 1978 in Asunción of natural causes. He received a state funeral, Stroessner attended the funeral service.
