Life

The younger brother of Luigi Ricci joined at the age of nine years to the Conservatory of Naples, where he studied composition with Niccolò Antonio Zingarelli, counterpoint with Pietro Raimondi as well as his own brother and Bellini. In 1829 he accompanied his brother to Rome, where he graduated acquaintance with the French painter Horace Vernet, the imposing appearance as often painted him. 1841 won Federico at La Scala a success with the opera seria Corrado d' Altamura, whose plot is based on the same stuff as Verdi's early work Oberto, Conte di San Bonifacio. After this success, ordered King Carlo Alberto Ricci at two cantatas opportunity for his court, whose first listed in 1842 for the wedding of Crown Prince Victor Emmanuel II. Ricci was now famous, has traveled to Madrid and Lisbon and became known in the salons of Paris. After he (listed in 1852 at the Theater am Kärntnertor ) in Vienna with Il marito e l' amante had initially won a success, his next work, The paniere d'amore was a miserable failure, whereupon he a job as conductor at the Imperial Theatre in St. Petersburg accepted. 1869 Verdi asked him to contribute a piece for the album Piave, in support of the librettist Francesco Maria Piave, which was then paralyzed by a stroke. In the same year Ricci was asked at the request of Verdi Milan by a committee to write a Recordare for the Messa per Rossini, to be performed one year after the death of Rossini. 1869 Ricci moved from Russia to Paris and enjoyed there again popularity as the author of several Opéras bouffe, including Une folie à Rome. In 1876 he moved to retire to Conegliano in the Veneto region, where he died the following year and was buried in Trieste. His last opera Don Quixote remained unfinished.

Federico Ricci was an elegant composer and used a style that was more internationalized than regionally. Some works were written in collaboration with his brother, including the last opera Crispino e la comare (1850 premiered in Venice). He composed 19 operas.
