Feeble-minded

As bullshit a mild to severe mental retardation or intellectual deficit is referred to in the original sense. While the term is no longer used in psychiatry today, he is in the law still in use. Colloquially, the term is used today as a synonym for "nonsense."

Etymology

In German dictionary bullshit is the end of the 19th century described as a lack of feeling and intellect, the derived moronic as " blunt mind, with a rudimentary sense of life ". Gradually took the term as a milder term for " bullshit " its importance as mental retardation.

Use in psychiatry

In psychiatry, the term was to the 20th century as a collective term for the graded degrees of mental retardation, debility (light ), imbecility ( moderate to severe ) and idiocy ( heaviest). In the psychiatric diagnosis corresponded to " bullshit " an intelligence quotient below 70, that is more than two standard deviations from the mean. In congenital forms of oligophrenia term was used synonymously.

The diagnosis " (congenital ) bullshit " in psychiatry is now obsolete, judgmental and discriminatory and is no longer used, since often the causes (eg fragile X syndrome ) are known.

Use in jurisprudence

In legal use of the word in Germany is still in use. Here, the term continues to refer to a mental disability in terms of a reduction in the cognitive performance of a human.
