Felip Pedrell

Felip Pedrellian i Sabaté, in Spanish Pedrell ( born February 19, 1841 in Tortosa, † August 19, 1922 in Barcelona) was a Catalan composer and musicologist.

Life

Pedrellian is considered the father of Spanish musical nationalism. He was largely self-taught. His works include operas (among Els Pireneus, composed in 1891, UA Barcelona, January 4, 1902), zarzuela, orchestral works, church and chamber music and songs. In a study visit to Rome he met the great tradition of Spanish music that is gathered in the local archives. His goal was to support the Spanish national style, both in the expression of historical art music, as well as in the lighter folk music.

His musicological studies culminated in the publication of the complete works (1902-1913) of the Spanish Renaissance composer Tomás Luis de Victoria ( 1548-1611 ). In 1873 he became director of the opera house at the Teatro Circo in Barcelona. In 1894 he went as a university teacher to Madrid. This period brought contacts with famous musicians such as Andrés Segovia and Emilio Pujol. In 1904 he returned to Barcelona.

His most important students were Enrique Granados, Manuel de Falla and Robert Gerhard.
