Felix Ayo

Félix Ayo ( born July 1, 1933, Sestao, Vizcaya, Spain ) is an Italian violinist of Basque origin.

Life

Félix Ayo already put the age of fourteen at the Conservatorio de Música in Bilbao Vizcaíno the Concert Diploma as a soloist from before he studied in Paris and Rome with Remy Principe ( 1889-1977 ). From 1952 to 1967 he was concertmaster of the chamber orchestra I Musici, whose founding members he belonged. In 1968 he founded with Marcello Abbado (piano), Alfonso Ghedin ( viola) and Vincenzo Altobelli (cello ), the Quartetto Beethoven, but he left after just two years. From 1972 he taught at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome. As a soloist he has performed with, among others, the symphony orchestras of Rome, Naples, Madrid, Copenhagen and Tokyo, the Australian Chamber Orchestra, the Berlin Chamber Orchestra, the Tokyo String Ensemble, the Virtuosi di Roma and the Zagreb Soloists. Since 1983, he also acts as a conductor.

Awards

For his recordings Ayo was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque, the Premio della Critica Discografica Italiana, twice the Edison Prize and three times the price of the German Record Critics. His musical life's work has been honored with the award of the Premio Roma and the Premio San Michele.
