Felix Basch

Felix Basch ( born September 16, 1885 in Vienna, † May 17, 1944 in Los Angeles ) was an Austrian- German actor and director.

Life

Felix Basch trained as an actor at the Burgtheater in Vienna - one of his teachers was Adolf of sun valley - where he then was part of the ensemble. In 1913, the cousin of Richard Tauber came with his wife, operetta singer Grete friend, to Berlin, where he made ​​his first film. In 1916 he made ​​his first film as a director stone among stones.

In the 1920s he was one of the most renowned directors of the German silent cinema. After the seizure of power by the Nazis in 1933, he went with his wife and son, Peter Basch, who was to become a famous photographer later, into exile in the United States. The family first lived in New York City, but went to Hollywood in 1935, where, however, like so many German emigrants did not succeed in his old profession to gain a foothold. He left the family and went back to Europe, where he tried in London and Paris to write screenplays and to realize. However, this suggested as misguided. In 1939 he returned to the family back to Los Angeles, where he earned his living as of 1942 with small roles in American propaganda films.

In 1944 he contracted after a blood transfusion hepatitis B and died at the age of only 58 years.
